Dolphins beat First Bank 77-72 to become Nigeria’s new queens
Dolphins Basketball Club at the weekend in Lagos proved their superiority over reigning champions, First Bank, whom they defeated 77-72 to become the new Zenith Bank Women Basketball League queens.
In the game filled with frills and thrills of the sport at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos, Dolphins took the lead in all quarters of the tie despite the heroics of First Bank ‘s Nkechi Akashili and Chioma Udeaja.
Dolphins’ Patience Okpe, Juliet Currency and Tokunbo Olaosebikan were the thorn in the flesh of First Bank, who struggled from behind to get back to the game in every quarter. But the Elephant Girls could only earn free shots, which did not get them enough points to win the game.
Speaking at the end of the game, an excited Dolphins Coach, Ochuko Okworogun, told The Guardian that hard work and determination was the secret behind his team’s success.
“I am happy that my girls were able to carry the day. We worked hard for this title. Before the game I told the girls they should not relent in ensuring they win. Getting second or third place was not enough for the team. The girls worked with this spirit and the result is victory,” he said.
