THE University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has appointed Professor Godwin Joseph Igwe as Chair occupant of Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) in Gas Processing Engineering.

The university is one of six tertiary institutions benefitting from NLNG’s N2 billion (two billion naira) funding support, dedicated to building/renovation and supply of state-of the-art equipment for teaching and research in Engineering faculties.

Each of the six institutions, comprising University of Ibadan, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, University of Maiduguri, University of Ilorin and the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, will access funds of approximately N340million, provided by NLNG. On its part, University of Port Harcourt elected to have NLNG endow a Chair to research, focused on gas processing, refining and petrochemicals.

A statement explained that the goal is to provide research-based information to stakeholders in the oil and gas industry at a fee “which will in turn generate funding for more research, thus ensuring sustainability”.

It explained that during a recent inspection visit to assess the progress of work at the Gas Engineering faculty by NLNG management, it was observed that substructure work had been completed for the new building with ongoing progress on the superstructure.

The statement said: “We are delighted with the appointment of an NLNG Chair at UniPort’s Gas Processing Engineering Faculty.

It speaks to a single-minded focus on researching and developing the country’s gas potential that one suspects will have a positive impact on the wider oil and gas industry,” said Kudo Eresia-Eke, Nigeria LNG’s General Manager, External Relations.

As the Chair occupant, sitting at the Centre for Gas, Refining and Petrochemicals at the Institute of Petroleum Studies, Professor Igwe is responsible to the Vice Chancellor. An inventor and author, Professor Igwe has taught in various Universities, including the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) and Texas A & M University in the United States of America.

He is a registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Texas, World Bank McNamara Outstanding Scholar, and Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

NLNG is jointly owned by four shareholders, namely, the Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC (49%), Shell Gas BV, SGBV, (25.6%), Total LNG Nigeria Limited (15%), and Eni International (N.A,) N. V. S. a. r. l (10.4%).
