The disconnection of electricity supply to the Sokoto state-owned Orthopaedic Hospital in Wamakko, headquarters of Wamakko local government of the state, has paralysed its operations.

The News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) reports that the hospital was disconnected on May 28 by the officials of the Gwiwa Business unit of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDC).

NAN also reports that the hospital was disconnected sequel to the failure of its management to pay its outstanding debts of about N 1.57 million, which was said to have accumulated for about five months.

The Chairman, Medical Advisory council ( CMAC) of the hospital, Dr Nura Altine confirmed the development when he spoke to newsmen in Wamakko on Wednesday.

He lamented that the hospital was now relying on its generators which were being alternated six-hourly.

” We have been paying the company about N 600,000 monthly to defray the debt, but there was a delayed payment.

” We are, however, making efforts to ensure that we pay the outstanding debt for the electricity supply to be restored any moment from now.

” The ugly development had forced us to discharge some of our less critical patients, as we cannot operate on generators for 24 hours non-stop,” Altine, added.

The Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Health, Dr Buhari Kware, who also confirmed the story, noted that efforts were on to settle the debt with a view to reconnecting the power supply.

The Manager of the Gwiwa Business Unit of the KEDC, Mr Umar Mohammed said that the hospital was disconnected due to the non payment of the N 1.57 million debt.

” We will reconnect the hospital as soon as the money is paid to us and we had no option than to take the bitter action,” Mohammed, said.
