boxing-glovesThree days before the beginning of the maiden edition of the Kenneth Minimah National Boxing Championship slated for the indoor sports hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, pugilists from across the country have started trooping into Lagos for the event.

Sunday is the official arrival date for the championship, which will also serve as the national trials for the 2015 All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville.

One of the boxers, Ikechukwu Igweme, from the South East, who will be fighting in the middleweight class, said he decided to be in Lagos ahead of the arrival date to settle down properly before the main event.

Also speaking on the championship, the ladies’ champion, Soldier girl, Kehinde Obare, who just returned from the United Arab Emirates, where she went for a medical treatment following the injury she sustained while representing Nigeria at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, said she wants to use the trials to prove that she is fully fit to take on anybody in her weight category and thanked the Boxing Federation President, Kenneth Minimah, for sponsoring the trials.

Meanwhile, Secretary General of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, Olusola Luke, who confirmed the early arrival of boxers, has expressed fears on the number of bout to be staged following the number of entries received so far.

According to Luke, despite the reduction of men’s bouts to 10 weight categories and six weight categories for the women, the number of entries received is overwhelming, as every boxer wants to be at the forthcoming 2015 Congo Brazzaville All Africa Games.
