THE National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members deployed to Adamawa State have been charged to brace up and be ready to make useful contributions to the cause of national development by giving their best in the task of nation-building.

The corps members were also tasked on the need to take advantage of the various empowerment schemes provided by the government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) for self-sustenance.

Adamawa State governor, Alhaji Jibrila Umar Bindow, represented by NYSC State Governing Board Chairman, Alhaji Salihu Inuwa, who gave the charge at the swearing-in ceremony of the 2015 Batch ‘A’ (Stream II) orientation course for corps members deployed to Adamawa State where a total of 2,512 corps members took the oath of allegiance, urged the corps members to consider the service year as a period of national sacrifice.

He said the time has come for corps members to see themselves as responsible citizens and come to terms with the prevailing realities in our national life, adding: “Without doubt, the current situation in our country calls for unity, commitment and hardwork to help its development.”

Also, while presenting the President’s speech at the event, Bindow said that the present administration would soon unveil a comprehensive national youth empowerment programme anchored on the model provided by the NYSC scheme to comprehensively address youth unemployment, insecurity and social vices prevalent among our youths.”

He said the NYSC as a globally-recognised scheme would ensure that the roles of corps members as change agents would be properly articulated and harnessed for the benefit of all citizens across the country, stressing: “Corps members must avoid indulging in crimes and other negative vices that impede our collective efforts to move the nation forward. Our quest for peace and progress had been disrupted and frustrated by social ills, many of them perpetrated by young people.”

The Adamawa NYSC state Co-ordinator, Umaru Joro Daniel in his welcome remark, appreciated the corps members for the successful completion of their academic programmes and urged them to give their utmost support in the task of moving the country forward.
