Shell moves to reduce road accidents

SHELL Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) is partnering the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and state governments in the country to reduce road accidents, the company’s Manager, Government Relations, Mr. Edesiri Akpomudjere, has said.

Akpomudjere, who disclosed this during the second edition of Safe Routes to School, the company’s child road safety initiative held at Saint Andrew’s State School, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, regretted that highway accidents have killed more people than a combination of HIV/AIDS, Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) and other deadly diseases.

“Road accident affects the entire family, not just the single individual involved,” he noted. “In Nigeria, we have chatted with the Federal Road Safety Commission and state governments to see how we can reduce the carnage on the roads. Children are the most vulnerable as a lot have been wasted by irresponsible and careless drivers.”

The Rivers State Government, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Minabelem Michael-West, lauded SPDC for the project. He thanked the firm for partnering states on the project, stressing that the project is vital to sustaining Rivers’ reforms in schools.
