Sambo, Mimiko urge support for Buhari, eulogise Jonathan

PEOPLE’S Democratic Party (PDP) stalwarts, Vice-President Namadi Sambo and Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko have enjoined Nigerians to support the incoming administration of President elect, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) for him to succeed.

Sambo made the call at the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN) Stakeholders Conference, held at the Main Conference Auditorium, National Mosque Complex, Abuja.

His words: “Government, as you are aware, is a continuum and with the coming of a new democratic dispensation, it has ushered in a new government, which will soon be inaugurated. I urge you to continue to give them maximum support and cooperation to enable them succeed.”

He noted the contributions of the MSSN in positively shaping the moral upbringing of the Muslim youth.

According to him, the society has remained one of the veritable tools for grooming youths to becoming responsible future leaders, leading to the emergence of outstanding and eminent personalities.

He further noted with delight that the MSSN had continued to promote national unity and harmony in the country. The vice-president, therefore, assured of the Federal Government’s support for the society and all others with similar objectives.

Sambo stressed the need for the MSSN and the entire Muslim Ummah, to propagate the true message of Islam as encapsulated in the Qur’an, Hadith and Sunnah, saying: “The Message of Islam is the Message of peace, hope, harmony, goodwill and brotherhood.”

Dr. Mimiko solicited support and prayers for the success of the in-coming government just as he called for prayers for President Goodluck Jonathan for his sacrifice for peace and political stability of Nigeria.

He made the plea during a thanksgiving service at Cathedral Church of St. David in Akure, submitting that Jonathan should be commended for his wisdom and humility to accept defeat at the appropriate time with a view to saving the country from political calamity.

The governor, who thanked the church of God for prayers offered before and during the last general elections, stressed that God had answered same and the entire nation was now enjoying peace.

While thanking the people for their support and prayers when the political situation was tense in the state, Mimiko assured workers of harmonious relationship with his administration in the best interest of the people.

Mimiko, re-affirming the commitment of his government to continue to provide usual workers welfare package for the entire public servants, emphasized that government had been meeting its responsibilities to them in the face of dwindling revenue from the federation account allocation.

According to him, his government continued to avail the workers with housing/car loans and recruitment of staff in the areas of critical needs among others.

Mimiko, who enumerated the landmark achievements of his administration in healthcare services, education and agricultural sector, said that the recent re-designation of administrative secretaries at the local government service to permanent secretaries, re-absorption of the laid-off illegally recruited council workers and career elongation of graduate primary school teachers to grade level 16 were all done to boost the morale of workers.

Meanwhile, Mimiko has pleaded with the Federal Government to promptly release the N1billion take-off grant for the newly established Federal Polytechnic in Ile-Oluji.

He made the plea in his office in Akure while receiving a letter of approval of the polytechnic from the Minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau, who was conferred with a chieftaincy title of Atunluse by the Jegun of Ile-Oluji, Oba Stephen Adedugbe.

The governor, who described the polytechnic as a symbol of community involvement in tertiary institution, noted that the people of Ile-Oluji were excited and much ready to make sacrifice for the smooth take-off of the institution.

Mimiko, who also assured of the readiness of his government to ensure speedy take-off of the polytechnic and make it a world-class polytechnic, commended President Goodluck Jonathan for responding to the age-long demand of the state for a federal polytechnic.

While presenting the letter of approval to the governor, Shekarau stated that the establishment of the polytechnic was based on the need to develop manpower required for sustainable development of the country in critical areas.

Shekarau assured that officials of his ministry would work with the state government in the development of temporary and permanent sites for the take-off of the polytechnic and also work out the master plan for the development of administrative block for principal officers of the institution.

Mimiko and Shekarau later paid an inspection visit to both the temporary and permanent sites of the polytechnic in Ile-Oluji where they lauded the enthusiasm of the people of the community towards speedy take-off of the institution.

Speaking after he conferred the chieftaincy on the education minister in his palace, the monarch said that the community would remain grateful to Jonathan and Shekarau for their efforts towards educational transformation and societal development.
