Police arraign man for defrauding, assaulting woman in Abuja

The police on Thursday arraigned one Anthony Peters at a Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly defrauding a woman and beating her up.

Peters, a resident of Apo, Abuja is standing trial on four-count charge of criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, cheating and causing hurt.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Shedrack Dauda told the court that one Miss Nnoh Martha of Centage Estate, Apo reported the matter at the Apo Police Station on April 4.

Dauda told the court that the complainant entrusted N85, 000 cash to the accused and one Adeola, who is now at large, to help her secure an apartment.

He alleged that the accused person and his accomplice converted the said money to their personal use and did not secure the apartment for the complainant as agreed.

The prosecutor further said the accused persons beat up Martha and inflicted injury on her head when she approached them for either the apartment, as agreed, or a refund of her money.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 97, 312, 322 and 246 of the Penal Code.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with a reliable surety that must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

Kagarko adjourned the case till June 9 for hearing.
