As the nation continues to seek practical solutions to the challenge of youth unemployment across the country, one programme, which scope and scale cut across all the states of the federation is the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) introduced by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The initiative aims at curbing unemployment in the country, and empowering graduates of tertiary institutions with skills acquisition that helps equip the corps members to survive financially without a white-collar job.

Speaking at the event, which held recently at Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Director, SAED, Mrs. Mary Dan-Abi, represented by Lagos NYSC State Coordinator, Cyril Akhanemhe, urged the corps members to cease the opportunity of the SAED Programme and be self-employed, adding that the only panacea to underemployment, unemployment and true economic growth is entrepreneurship development.

According to him, it is gratifying to note that the NYSC-SAED programme within the last three years has made significant progress and achieved remarkable success, stressing that a good number of corps members trained through the initiative have established their businesses with the minimum amount of startup capital and they are doing well.

He said, “we just don’t give the corps members skill, we also help them on how to develop the business through deliberate training on how to write business proposals. One other assistance we give is to also to help them access some funds and soft loans as startup capital for the take-off of their business plan.”

“We have a Memorandum of Understanding with Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Bank of Industry (BoI). We have discussed with our partners, who had funds that are not accessible by corps members on how to make it easier for them to access the funds and kick start their businesses. We are not there yet because we are yet to come up with the right result of empowering them to startup their businesses,” He added,

Akhanemhe, commended the trainers and collaborators for their commitment, which has helped taken the project this far, and urged them to make good use of the opportunity and take the initiative to the next level.

“We need assistance and people to help corps members who are already producing to market their goods. We need more serious collaborations, so that we can turn many of these corps members into entrepreneurs rather than possessing the skill alone.

“I call on all of you to make up your minds to make the NYSC-SAED programme a success. Don’t just be a stakeholder, but be a stakeholder that is committed to ensuring that the objective of creating the department and creating the skill acquisition programme and transformation of the present administration is achieved.

Also speaking at the event, one of the collaborators, Simba Industry, represented by its Manager Sales, Ojukwu Linda, said the company, which has been in Nigeria for over 25 years, and known for its Samba motor cycle and alternative power source, such as inverter, solar panel and battery, would partner with NYSC to train corps member in building these alternative power sources.

She said, “like you hard about social media, your phone or laptop will be of no use to you if there is no electricity to charge and your generator is not working well, that is where your inverter come in. We deal with different kind of inverter that provides uninterrupted power supply mainly for ATM machines, computers.

“Our inverter are very unique such that it is very fast to charge, automatic, stress free and you don’t need to wake up on it. If you are sleeping and there power outage, the inverter it automatically on itself,” she added.
