IT was glitz, glamour and a roll call of who is who in Nigeria yesterday when Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole exchanged marital vows with his heartthrob, Iara Fortes. Iara, a lawyer by profession and top model, is from the Cape Verde Islands.

The governor and his bride had signed the dotted lines at a private marriage registry attended only by family and a few friends at his Iyamho residence at Iyamho, Etsako West Council of the state, after which top dignitaries in the country, led by the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, headed for the wedding reception held at the People’s White Hall in the governor’s country home.

This is coming five years after Oshiomhole lost his wife, Clara, to cancer.

Oshiomhole said his new wife “is more or less the mother of the house,” adding: “This is something that one is happy about. One is also happy that I have people across all political divides. The occasion reminds me that across all divides, we have friends and well wishers.”

On his new wife, he went further: “She is very humble. She appreciates the nature of my work and life. That it is one that one comes back home late, sometimes 3a.m. She understands my weaknesses.

“She is more or less the mother of the house; the one that has accepted to be the mother of my children. I am happy that all my children are at home with her and accept her as their mother.

“Even though she is not old enough to be their mother, she has accepted to fill that gap.”

Regarding where his new wife hails from, Oshiomhole said: “I have seen a lot of publications, some saying she is Philipino, Dutch and others, but she is from Cape Verde, which is part of West Africa, and I hope that puts to rest where is she is from.”

Wife of the President-elect, Aisha Buhari, in her speech, prayed for God’s guidance, as “she (Iara) becomes a Nigerian.”

Chairman of the occasion, former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd), described the day as a special one. He said the governor’s wife completes and complements him and he admonished the couple to show true love and have patience in their dealings with one another.

The Oba of Benin was represented high-ranking palace chiefs, including Chief David Edebiri, the Esogban of Benin Kingdom.

Parents of the bride, Mr. and Mrs. Fortes flew in from their home in the Netherlands to attend the ceremony, while the governor’s mother, Hajia Aishetu Oshiomhole, was also in attendance.

The governor’s children, Steve, Adams and Jane and two of his grandchildren were also on hand to show love and support for their father and his wife.

In attendance were President-elect Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd); his wife, Aisha; Vice President-elect, Prof Yemi Osinbajo; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal; Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; former head of state, Governors Rauf Aregbesola (Osun); Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta); Liyel Imoke (Cross River); Ibrahim Dankwambo (Gombe) and Abdul Aziz Yari (Zamfara).

Others were Senators Bukola Saraki, Domingo Obende and Tunde Ogbeha; Mr. Dino Melaye; Otunba Niyi Adebayo; Mallam Nasir El-Rufai; Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Mr. Peter Obi, representatives of the governors of Kogi and Kwara states; and business moguls, Aliko Dangote and Femi Otedola.

Also present were National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Oyegun; former deputy governor of Edo State, Rev Peter Obadan; President of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wahab; former governor of old Bendel State, Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia; former governor of the state, Prof Osereimhen Osunbor; Dr. Chris Ogiemwonyi; Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase; and president of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Rev Felix Omobude.

l thought this governor is an intelligent guy. How can he make this mistake?. This girl is a gold digger. There is no connection of any sort between the two, except money and perhaps fame. Cape Verdians are racist people. Watch your back Mr. governor. But l wish you guys well. Allen Anya Agwu

I am interested to know how old this little girl he now call wife is. Surely younger than all his daughters. This shows you how lavishing and inferior our elites are. How on earth can Adams be this cheap? I used to think that Oshimole is intelligent, smart and well planed man. But this shows that some men loose their head whenever women are involved. Is Oshimole telling us that there are no more decent, obedience, humble, quality and beautiful women in the whole of Edo state? This is really a big shame and a show of ignorance by this respected son of Edo state. Just look at the so called humble wife answering her phone call while walking hand in hand with the mumu husband on such occasional moment of their life. What is so important about the mobile phone that she cannot keep it aside until the ceremony is over. Well, I think that Oshimole is in for a rough ride with his choice of wife. He will really see pepper in this kind of girl. I really pity this man. And worst still the young girl is a lawyer. Edo state sorry for your money.

I don’t know whether to accept your sorry because these things you said here are somehow true. In fact it looks very rude for her to be answering phone at that moment when she should concentrate all her attention on her new love.

I also noted the phone. This is only the beginning. ‘Humble’ indeed. Did the man never look in the mirror? Oshiomhole has really fooled no one but himself.

The governor has the right to choose who she marries. It is not a good thing to limit ones choice of love or where to live to a tribal or regional patronage as you are suggesting. The fact that the governor has committed his life to a single woman after the death of his wife rather than jumping from one woman to the other should be praised.

I don’t think your point has any validity or relevance. Affairs of the heart are not amenable to logical or political permutations except of course if we are talking about royalty. The man has the right to marry whomsoever he pleases no matter how appropriate it may appear to you so long there is no illegality, Zamfara state exgovernor to please note.
In short leave the man alone, there is nothing wrong with liking better thing

Who knows how much of Edo’s wallet that was used to beg this beau to close her eyes and say “I do” for the moment. Time will tell. Her parents must have been sobbing to see their daughter’s wimpy bride. Happy second missionary “married” life Adams.

Congrats Comrade ! What a delightful delicacy that can NEVER be found in Nigeria.

Yarima went to Egypt and now you are coming from the Cape Verde Islands. Perhaps, when I get older, acquire power, money and fame, I will stop buying and consuming Nigerian made goods, precious or not. Who knows. Until then, Congrats, ojaree !

Seems we all have not been fair to Comrade Oshiomole,,,Osho
Baba…….I have read a lot of write ups on him,,,,,seen a lot of
different pictures as well…..but i must say we’ve not been fair to
him……We have all condemned and crucified him just because the lady
he married is “white” in complexion,,,,,I am sure had it been he married
a lady with dark skin nobody would have noticed……This condemnation
has been overblown out of proportion.

Are you guys aware that Chief Emmanuel
Iwuanyanwu marries a 26year old lady at age 72,,,,age difference of
46,,,,,,,and Osho Baba married a 25yrs old lady at age 63,,,,age
difference 38……Like i said in a comment his marriage to this young
lady has nothing to do with making babies rather to be happy…..There
is a saying in yoruba language that OLOWO SHEY OHUN GBOGBO TAN…..So my
friends let us be happy with Osho baba and let us give a chance to
    enjoy his marriage….

What do you expect when you marry a “young girl”. Expect more to come! She is looking for a sugar daddy. He is looking for sweet sixteen. After all, David in the Bible was comforted at his old age just like Ashy.

Did he make her sign a pre-nup. I hope he did.

To whom much is given much is required. Nigerians and Edo people gave Mr. Oshimole the keys to Edo State but he has acted with impunity. When someone is a public figure, one is required to reflect the values of the society that he or she represents. Mr. Oshimole has impugned the integrity of his office and has held Nigerian women in disdain. If Mr. Oshimole were a private citizen, I would not have any qualms with what he does with his life but as a public figure he is not showing a good example as a representative of Nigerian values and culture. Oshimole’s action is very spiteful.
