CHAIRMAN of the National/House of Assembly Election Tribunal in Sokoto State, Justice Anselm A. Nwaigwe, has warned that any delay in hearing and determining election petitions would be dangerous because the tribunal is time-bound and its time cannot be extended.

Nwaigwe, who gave the warning yesterday while addressing the inaugural sitting of the tribunal, confirmed that the body has so far received four petitions arising from the recent elections in the state, one of which is on the Senate while the other three bother on the House of Representatives election.

According to him, the duty of the tribunal is to do justice in all matters to all parties, irrespective of who is involved, and there should be no sacred lambs. Therefore, solicited the support and cooperation of lawyers, urging them to uphold the dignity of their profession by being punctual at sessions and advising their clients to be orderly both in and outside the tribunal.

Nwaigwe warned that the tribunal would resist any attempt to influence it and that the full weight of the law would be visited on any such person.

He also solicited the support and cooperation of the media, urging them to always crosscheck their facts with the tribunal secretary before publication so as to avoid creating tension or havoc through misinformation.
