imprisonmentAN inmate of Benin Prisons, who reportedly escaped while on menial duty around the facility has been re-captured by prison officials.

The prisoner identified as Ossai Prosper was reportedly re-arrested around Mission on Monday afternoon by prison officials.

The state Controller of the Nigeria Prison Service (NPS), Affiong Etowa confirmed this to journalists yesterday and said the inmate was due for discharge in early August and was working on government farm when he slipped off the warder supervising him.

“But my men were up to the task as they quickly mobilised to search for him and he was eventually located in a market around Mission Road.

He said as part of the punishment, the prisoner would forfeit the remission of his sentence.

The controller said in addition, the inmate would be taken back to court for fresh prosecution. He said it was normal for inmate to be taken to work, especially when the time for their discharge was nearer.

“It is part of their resettlement plan to learn a trade and in the case of this one, he was being taught how to farm.

“We also took him out to start getting integrated to the outside world so that he wouldn’t find it difficult when he is eventually released,” he stated.

Etowa said the farm the inmate was working on when he escaped is owned by the government and close to the state headquarters.
