Don’t tow the line of past govts, cleric charges in-coming administration

The Bishop of the Egba Diocese of Anglican Church, Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Oludaisi Adekunle yesterday appealed to the in-coming administration of Gen. Mohammadu Buhari to leave no stone unturned to bring back morality into the society, which is at its lowest ebb at present.

He suggested the re-introduction of the War Against Indicipline (WAI) as one of the ways to restore discipline to the Nigerians society

The Cleric who spoke in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital reminded Buhari that, in view of the tremendous confidence Nigerians had placed in him, he could not afford to disappiont them.

Also, an elder statesman, Christopher Kolade has charged Christians to tackle the high level of moral decadence in the society.

Adekunle who made the appeal while delivering his “Bishop Charge” at the end of the third session of the 13th Synod of the Church, also pleaded with the in-coming National Assembly members not to tow the line of corruption but also must be patriotic enough to do away with some of the perquisites of office and voluntarily reduce their salaries.

He praised President Goodluck Jonathan for organising a free and fair elections and also conceding defeat.
The Cleric commended the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun for his performance in office and urged him to do better in his second tenure.

“Let me appeal to Mr. President-elect to put up his best and not to perform below the expectation of Nigerian citizens. Let the ‘Change’ bear a positive transformation beyond mere slogan on every Nigerian to uproot and destroy every malignant social vice that has grown to deface our country Nigeria”, Adekunle stated.

He added, “Let us appeal to the conscience of the incoming Senators and Honourable Representatives in the Federal and State House of
Assemblies not to tow the line of corruption of the previous assemblymen in allotting outrageous salaries and allowances to themselves at the expense of the wellbeing of the citizens of the country”.

“They should be courageous enough to cancel some of these perquisites and slash down the contemptible amount allotted to themselves. By this, funds will be available for infrastructural developments and sponsorship of social welfare programmes. There should be a common focus on how to reinstate a vibrant national economy and a functional system,” the Cleric affirmed.

According to the Clergyman, “Change in the government of this country is now a reality. Come May 29, a new set of national leaders will be in place. We hope there will be peaceful transition. We pray that Nigeria will experience peace and prosperity in our time and the hopes of the masses on security, employment, viable economy, qualitative education, constant power supply, mass transit means of transportation, agriculture, industrialisation, social discipline and the likes will not be dashed in the new dispensation”.

Kolade who was the guest speaker challenged Christians to let Christian virtues reflect in their daily activities at all times.

He was of the view that the profusion churches and other religious centres in the country does not reflect in the moral nor spiritual
lives of the people.
