2,200 corps members sworn in Anambra

In his valedictory address, President Goodluck Jonathan, commended the corps members for discharging their duties with diligence, transparency and patriotism during the just concluded general elections conducted across the country.

No fewer than 2, 200 corps members for the 2015 Batch “A” service year were on Thursday sworn-in for the orientation programme of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Anambra.

In his valedictory address, President Goodluck Jonathan, commended the corps members for discharging their duties with diligence, transparency and patriotism during the just concluded general elections conducted across the country.

Represented by the state Deputy Governor, Dr Nkem Okeke, the president further charged them to position themselves as positive agents of transformation and symbols of national integration.

“Your orientation course programme is packaged to acquaint you with all you need to know for a successful service year.

“It is also designed to inculcate in you the spirit of discipline, leadership and self-reliance skills expected of future great leaders,” Jonathan said.

He appealed to the incoming administration of retired Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to continue to support and encourage corps members by fulfilling the statutory obligation of the scheme.

Earlier, the state Coordinator of the scheme, Mrs Robinca Odigwe, said that the corps members comprised 1, 029 males and 1, 171 females.

Odigwe, who urged the corps members to participate actively in all activities in the camp, commended Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra for his consistent support to the NYSC scheme in the state.

The corps members noted the ongoing work at the permanent site of the orientation camp at Umuawulu/Mbaukwu communities which would soon be completed.

In an interview, Mr Obinna Emeneke, the Chairman, State House Committee on Youths and Sports and member representing Anambra East state constituency, urged the corps members to embrace community development projects.

He commended Jonathan for initiating programmes for the youth and appealed to the President-elect to emulate him.
