Stakeholders Urge Incoming Govt To Fight Corruption

As preparations for handing over to the incoming government on May 29, at all levels of government across the country gather momentum, stakeholders in Akwa Ibom state have advised the President-elect, governor elects and lawmakers on what they should do to deliver on their mandate for the benefit of the electorates.

According to Dr. Aniekan Brown, lecturer, department of Philosophy and Anthropology, University of Uyo, the song of anti-corruption should be sang with the highest tune now.

He asked the President-elect to ensure that the fight against corruption is all-inclusive, stressing that it is only through such that followers will fall in line by doing what is right at the right time and place.

“As many as will be identified as corrupt person, nobody at the leadership level should condone it at any level, we can deal with corruption downward once those at the top echelon of power are dealt with, followers would naturally fall in line”, he said.

He challenged those elected to ensure that rightful persons with capacity and capability to perform are appointed into positions of authority.

“Right from appointment, we have to play down on sentiment, political patronage, nepotism, ethnicity, even if we want to go on that, we have to consider the capacity and capability of the person”, he advised.

He called on the incoming lawmakers across the country to sit up and prove their critics wrong as they were mostly described as being rubberstamps.

He further advised them to draw inspirations from the leadership qualities of the current national assembly where the Senate President and Speaker of the House are performing creditably.

On his part, the Chairman, Board of Trustees, Transformation Initiative for the Empowerment of Akwa Ibom people, Mr. Ephraim Inyang called on those elected to ensure that projects initiated by their predecessors are completed as tax payers money have been sunk into such projects.

According to him, every government project has a particular aim to achieve for the benefit of all.

Setting his own agenda, Dr. Uwem Akpan, lecturer department of Communication Arts, called on the President-elect to please ensure that all agreements entered into by the federal government with all academic unions should be implemented as such would guarantee industrial harmony and peace in the educational sector.
