Lawmaker seeks zoning of Senate top positions to Kano
A senator-elect representing Kano North senatorial district, Barau Jibrin, has stated reasons why Kano State should be considered in the zoning of leadership positions in the Senate reserved for the North West zone.
Citing the unprecedented success recorded by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last elections in Kano, the former Chairman, House Committee on Appropriations, Federal House of Representatives, asked other lawmakers, particularly APC members to consider the political relevance of Kano while making their choice.
Jibrin, while addressing journalists in Kano posited that the state contributed immensely towards the party’s victory in the presidential elections by giving APC the highest number of votes in all the states of the federation.
He added, “We should also not forget that Kano recorded similar feat in the other elections where APC won the governorship seat, the three senatorial positions, all the 24 House of Representatives seats in the state, in addition to getting 40 seats in the state House of Assembly.
“The people of Kano State, having performed creditably well in the last elections, are looking forward to a token of appreciation from their beloved party and we hope that this relationship between the party and the state would be immensely strengthened by giving the Senate’s principal officers positions to Kano State.”
Jibrin said, “As a legislator who knows the importance of experience in the business of legislation and thus knows the importance of ranking in the legislature, I feel that this arrangement in the National Assembly, important as it is, should not conflict with the provisions of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
We believe that in picking those who are to lead the Senate in the eighth Assembly, cognizance should be taken to the current political dynamics of the polity, particularly as it relates to contributions to the recent success of the party by each of the aspirants aspiring to the post of either a presiding officer or one of the principal officers of the Senate.”
The senator-elect also charged his colleagues in the next senate about the ambition of the incumbent Senate President, David Mark to return to the position.
He insisted that APC must present a consensus candidate as Senate president against presenting multiple candidates for the post, warning that the PDP caucus may appoint a single candidate for this same position.
It will be recalled that Jibrin about two weeks ago urged support for the current Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to occupy the position of Majority Leader of the Senate, which he believed would be zoned to the North West.
