Elections 2015: Jonathan congratulates Buhari

President Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidates in Saturday’s polls on his victory. In a statement personally signed by the president on Tuesday night 3, he conveyed his best wishes to Buhari and prayed for the unity of the country.

President Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidates in Saturday’s polls on his victory.

In a statement personally signed by the president on Tuesday night 3, he conveyed his best wishes to Buhari and prayed for the unity of the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that former Head of State and Chairman, National Peace Committee, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, had confirmed to newsmen in Abuja, that Jonathan had earlier congratulated Buhari through the telephone.

In the election, Buhari polled 15,424,921votes to defeat Jonathan, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, who scored 12,853,162 votes.

Buhari, a retired Major General from Nigerian Army was born on Dec. 17, 1942. He hails from Daura in Katsina State.

Buhari enlisted into the army in 1961 and was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in 1963.

In March, 1976, the then Head of State, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo appointed him as a Federal Commissioner of Petroleum and Natural Resources.

He overthrew former President Shehu Shagari on Dec. 31, 1983 and became Head of State until Aug. 27, 1985, when he was overthrown in a coup d’etat.

Buhari unsuccessfully ran for office of a democratic president of the country in 2003, 2007 and 2011 elections on the platform of different political parties.

In December, 2014, he emerged as the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, for the 2015 elections, which he won on Saturday.

Buhari is married to Aisha and blessed with five children, four girls and a boy.
