gunmen1YET to be identified gunmen have killed eleven persons in Rivers and Taraba states. The killing of four persons took place in Okrika and Eleme local councils.

The Guardian learnt that two persons were shot dead on Saturday in Okrika Local Council, while the other two were killed on Sunday in Eleme Local Council.

An eyewitness, who preferred anonymity, said one of the victims in Okrika was shot dead in his car while his body and the vehicle were taken away by the assailants, describing the killing as a ‘systematic elimination of perceived enemies.’ The second victim, according to him, was killed in his house by armed hoodlums and his body was as well carried away. He said the victim’s body was later found floating on the river.

In Eleme, it was gathered that two persons were killed in a clash between suspected cult members.
Also, suspected Fulani gunmen struck in Donga Local Council of Taraba State killing seven persons with scores of others injured.

Confirming the report on a telephone, the State Police Command spokesman Joseph Kwaji said efforts to reach the Divisional Police Officer of the council for details of the attack failed as his number was switched off.

The attacked local council is among those where the re-run of the governorship election slated for the 25th of this month would take place. As at the time of filing this report, neighbouring Wukari and Takum Local Councils in the state, are gathered by our reporter, are at present playing host to people fleeing from the area.
