Borno NLC want Shettima to pay piority attention to workers

The Borno State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Monday appealed to Gov. Kashim Shettima to pay priority attention to the workers’s welfare.

The Chairman of the congress, Mr Titus Abana, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri.

Abana observed that the state government was committed to the welfare of its workers but said that it must continue to take steps toward improving the lot of civil servants in the state.

He urged Shettima to look into the case of the workers who were disengaged from the service of Maiduguri International Hotels, Borno Investment Company and others working in state-owned revenue generation companies that were not founctioning.

“Even though these workers were supposed to work and generate salaries for themselves, the government should still look into the posibility of bringing them into the civil service because of the situation in the state.”

He explained that the union would continue to push for better working condition for the state employees to ensure good welfare packages and conducive working environment for them.

Abana also appealed to the state government to allocate owners houses of owner-occupier basis to state workers in its 505, 202, 303 and 707 housing estates to ease accommodation problems of workers.

“We also want to appeal to the state government to pay the outstanding 18 months minimum wage arrears for primary school teachers and local government staff.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Abana was re-elected the chairman of the Borno Chapter of the NLC to steer the mantle of leadership of the union for the next four years.
