Some Nigerian students’ currently studying in the U.S. under the amnesty programme have promised to return home after their programmes to contribute their quota towards the nation’s economic development.

In separate interviews with the North America correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Alabama, U.S.A., on Tuesday, the students assured the Federal Government of their loyalty and patriotism.

They assured Nigerians that they will not fail in their ambition to obtaining the best education and training.

A student, Kehinde Patife, studying Criminal Justice at the Alabama State University, said that he will return home after his programme.

”I am grateful to the Government for giving me this opportunity to better myself. I will not let Nigerians down.

”The future of Nigeria belongs to the youths, who are the leaders of tomorrow. After this programme, we will be better equipped to contribute our quota towards national development.

Patife called on Government to give more youths the opportunity to better themselves.

Another student of Criminal Justice at the Alabama State University, Miss Blessing Bolei, told NAN that she will return home after completing her programme.

Bolei, who will be completing her programme in May, said: ”I believe that I will have better opportunities back home.

”I thank the Federal Government for this opportunity. I have learnt from the best.

”What happened to us is beyond our wildest imagination,” she said.

She called on Government to ensure that more funds are provided in their annual budget for scholarships and youth development programmes that can lead to job opportunity for them.

Bolei said Nigeria will develop and become better if the Federal, States and Local Governments invest more in education.

Miss Chinonso Amaechi, a student of the Alabama University Birmingham, said education is the centre-piece for creating an ambitious and efficient youth.

Amaechi urged government to invest in creating more skill acquisition centres across the country to encourage youths to develop their talents.

It would be nice to have young motivated people all come to rebuild. But this article is not very accurate and I doubt both the students and their interviewer mean what they say. For one, the American Criminal justice system is very different from the Nigerian system which is British. Which is why there is no equivalency conversion for Nigerian lawyers in the US other than going back to undergraduate school in law. How are they going to apply criminal justice in Nigeria? Their majors should have been more reflective of Nigeria’s needs. And what amnesty did they get ?

You are right to an extent, but I don’t think that both are diametrically opposite. You can still adapt one to the other and improve with subsequent attendance of courses.
