The Governorship Candidate of the APC, Mr Akinwumi Ambode, was on Sunday declared winner of the Lagos State Governorship election.

Ambode defeated the PDP Governorship Candidate, Mr Jimi Agbaje, with a margin of 152,206 votes.

INEC Returning Officer for the election in the state, Prof. Isaac Adewole, at the Lagos headquarters of the commission, announced that Ambode polled a total of 811,994 votes to beat Agbaje, who had 659,788 votes.

“I, Prof Isaac Adewole, hereby certify that I was the returning officer of the governorship election held on the 11th day of April, 2015.

“I wish to declare that Akinwumi Ambode of APC, with a total vote of 811, 294, having satisfied the requirement of the law and securing 25 per cent of votes in all the local governments and scoring the highest votes is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,’’ he said.

Adewole, who is also the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, said that 16 political parties contested the governorship election in the state.

Mr Taju Agoro, PDP State Agent, had during the collation raised complaints over alleged irregularities in some wards during the polls.

Adewole responded by directing him to put the complaints in writing and follow due process as required by law.

Agoro refused to sign the results after they were declared.

The APC Agent, Sen. Tokumbo Afikuyomi, however, expressed delight that the party won the election.

Meanwhile, Agbaje had congratulated Ambode and conceded defeat before the final result was officially announced.

A statement signed by Agbaje’s Director of Media and Publicity, Mr Felix Oboagwina, confirmed that Agbaje had called the Governor-elect on phone to congratulate him.
