Electoral officials start the counting operations at a polling station in Lagos, on march 29, 2015. First results of Nigeria’s presidential election could be given from March 30, 2015, the head of the country’s electoral commission said, as voting went into a second day after technical glitches.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Sunday advised all media houses in the country to desist from announcing election results not released by INEC.

The President of the union, Malam Mohammed Garba, gave the advice in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

He said that extant electoral laws and guidelines mandated only INEC as the sole authority to announce poll results.

Garba urged Nigerians to remain calm as they await the outcome of the final result from INEC.

He further advised Nigerians to shun unauthorised announcement of election results which was capable of inciting violence.

Garba, however, expressed happiness with the peaceful conduct of the elections across the country.

The NUJ president urged stakeholders to ensure that the total number of votes cast reflects the outcome of the result.

He said that the union did not receive any case of assault on journalists so far in the polls.
