Govt boosts film industry with N500m

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has set aside about N500 million to boast the Nigerian film industry, with focus on the North-east region.

Addressing a sensitization workshop organised in Bauchi for filmmakers in the zone on Wednesday, the Director-General, Nigeria Film and Video Censors Board, Patricia Bala, explained that the gesture was part of the Federal Government’s initiative to boast the film industry towards self-employment and to reduce youth restiveness.

Already, she noted, filmmakers have started training in Los Angeles, United States (U.S.), aimed at improving quality production. According to her, there is no strict condition to access the fund, which ranges from N5-N50 million, through the Bank of Industry.

The film board, Bala stressed, is committed to improving Nigerian film production to international standard, adding that government would not relent in its desire to provide jobs to the teaming unemployed youths.

She further cautioned teenagers against hawking films or viewing same on the streets. Also speaking at the occasion, the zonal co-ordinator, Edward Edion, described the workshop as timely and a milestone in film and economic development.
