IN spirited effort to fast track industrialisation in Nigeria, Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi, (FIIRO) and National Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (NASME), Lagos State chapter have joined forces to equip small businesses with technological gadgets.

The move was consummated in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the two organisations recently.

The MoU, according to officials of both organisations, is aimed at tackling the challenges of industrialisation as well as create job opportunities for Nigerian youths.

The benefit of the alliance to small businesses is to strengthen Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) operators in the country through FIIRO technologies.

The Director General and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), FIIRO, Dr. Gloria Elemo, said that NASME are strategic partners with the research institute and have been instrumental to some of the successes recorded over the years.

Mrs. Elemo said the National Association of Small Scale Industrialists (NASSI) was about the only association taking care of the interest of enterprises in Nigeria apart from the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN).

Chairman, NASME, Lagos State Chapter, Mr. Jemi Alade, said that FIIRO has been of tremendous assistance to members of the association, a gesture, which inspired the move to strengthen the relationship.

He said: “NASME members have benefitted from FIIRO’s activities, and the research institute has helped in developing their businesses. FIIRO specialises in food processing. And, over time, they have produced machines that transform raw materials into consumer products. Some of their products are popular in the Nigerian markets. Instant-pounded yam came out of research finding of the institute. So we want to strengthen the relationship.”

“Despite the laudable objectives and achievement of NASSI, interest groups began to think outside the box to form an association that will not just take care of the small enterprises, but also medium enterprises, especially in the light of structural and legal framework. These gave clear definition to what a small enterprise and medium enterprise should be in terms of capital outlay, working capital requirements, number of employees and others. This is what led to the founding of the association.

She commended the effort of the founder of NASME for the giant stride in sticking to the idea of the association.
